Sew your own Hobby Horse with our Haflinger stick horse DIY kit! The set includes our SuperSoft SHORTY fabric in camel, a high-quality plush fabric that creates a soft, realistic horse coat. You’ll also receive a chunky yarn for the mane, allowing you to create great volume with just a few strands. We’ve also included a small piece of black felt that can be used to appliqué the eyes and nostrils of your Hobby Horse. The ivory plush fabric piece is perfect for sewing a blaze in the shape of your choice. The kit comes with our printed hobby horse template and a beautiful aqua/pink DIY kit for making 2–3 halters and leads for your horse.

Components of the material bundle

Hobby Horse fabric: Our SuperSoft SHORTY plush fabric in camel, pre-cut to 39.5×29.5″ (100×75 cm), is a light beige shade and perfect for sewing a Haflinger stick pony. This super-soft minky fabric has a slight sheen, and its short 1.5 mm pile makes shading the coat much easier (check out our tips and tricks for shading the coat here).

Yarn for the Hobby Horse mane: The classic Hobby Horse mane is made from yarn. We love using a chunky yarn because it is quite thick, giving your horse’s mane great volume with just a few strands. With this DIY stick horse kit, you’ll receive an ivory-colored yarn for the distinctive Haflinger look!

Fabric for the Hobby Horse blaze: You can appliqué different types of blazes to your Hobby Horse, such as a flake, star, long blaze etc.. For this, you will receive a 10 x 3.5 inch (9 x 25 cm) piece of our SuperSoft SHORTY in ivory. By the way: you don’t need an embroidery machine to make appliqués, your normal sewing machine is sufficient! How to appliqué with a sewing machine is explained in great detail in all our sewing instructions and you can also find videos about it on our Youtube channel.

Felt for eyes and nostrils: The included black felt piece measures 3×3 inch (7.5×7.5 cm) and can be used to appliqué the eyes and nostrils of your Hobby Horse. One of the advantages of using felt for appliqués is that you can simply sew them on with a straight stitch, as the edges won’t fray. Alternatively, the pattern includes embroidery files for use with an embroidery machine, as well as cutting files for use with a cutting machine such as a Cricut.

Sewing pattern: The bundle comes with a printed Hobby Horse template for our pattern HOPE (also featured in our Hobby Horse book). Our sturdy paper patterns are printed in color and include booklet-style illustrated instructions. The Hobby Horse template also covers accessories such as ear bonnets, a stable blanket, and basic halter instructions. Halter DIY kit: The bundle includes a Hobby Horse halter and lead DIY kit with aqua and pink ropes and webbing made from durable polypropylene (PP). You can create head collars, rope halters, leads, reins, and braided nosebands. The kit comes with matching hardware and a PDF tutorial link with easy step-by-step instructions.

In addition to the stick horse DIY kit, you’ll need:

• White hand embroidery floss for the eye twinkles, approx. 8″ (20 cm), alternatively white fabric paint or a white acrylic marker
• Double-sided iron-on adhesive webbing (e.g. Heat’n Bond), approx. 8×3″ (20×8 cm)
• Toy filling, approx. 1.1 lbs (500 g)
• Stick with a maximum diameter of 1.2″ (3 cm) and a minimum length of 24″ (60 cm )
• Yarn, cord or rope to wrap around the fabric at the stick opening, approx. 20″ (50 cm)
