Materials needed
To sew our xmas stocking sewing pattern, you’ll need the following:
- Main outer fabric, 22×14″ (56×34 cm)
- Lining fabric, 22×14″ (56×34 cm)
- Cuff fabric, 7×15″ (16×38 cm)
- Optional: medium-weight fusible interfacing (22×20″ or 56×50 cm) for extra structure
- Ribbon for the hanger, approx. 4″ (10 cm)
- Optional: fabric for the star appliqués and a double-sided iron-on adhesive (e.g., Heat’n Bond or Bondaweb), approx. 4×4″ (9×9 cm)
If you reinforce the cuff and outer pieces of the stocking with an interfacing, you can use almost any fabric for sewing it. We used our SuperSoft minky fabrics for sewing our sample, giving the stocking a soft, classic Christmas look. If you want something different, try a knit or furry fabric! Or use festive cotton prints or quilted fabrics for a unique twist.

For the star applique, any fabric works. We chose gold faux leather. The cuff, however, looks best in shaggy plush or a long-pile faux fur fabric!

Step-by-step instructions for sewing a Christmas stocking
1. Sew the stocking pieces
Cut all fabric pieces according to the stocking pattern. For thin fabrics, add interfacing to the cuff and outer stocking pieces for added stability. Then, with right sides facing, pin the two main/outer fabric pieces together. Sew them together with your chosen seam allowance, but leave out the upper edge. Do the same with the two lining pieces, but leave out the upper edge AND the opening for turning. Trim the seam allowances of both stocking pieces.
2. Sew the hanger loop
Form a loop with the ribbon and attach it to the cuff at the marking. Sew it in place within the seam allowance.
3. Prepare the cuff
Fold the cuff fabric in half with right sides facing and sew the short edge.
Turn it right-side out and fold it in half lengthwise.
5. Assemble the xmas stocking
Insert the outer stocking into the lining, right sides facing.
Place the cuff between the outer and lining pieces. Align the raw edges and pin everything together. Sew around the top edge, making sure all layers are even.
6. Finish the Santa stocking
Turn the stocking right-side out through the opening in the lining. Close the turning opening with a ladder stitch. Push the lining inside the stocking, and your Christmas stocking is complete!
