Not sure if cut & sew panels are right for you? Here we’ve collected the most common questions we get about how they work, what you need to sew them, and who they’re suitable for. From seam allowances to difficulty levels to sewing kit for beginner questions, this FAQ will help you understand everything before starting your project.
Cut & Sew panels: Sewing kit for beginner and other frequently asked questions
Is it a sewing kit for beginner?
Yes and no. Cut & sew panels are fantastic for beginners because the pattern pieces are already printed on the fabric. You just cut them out and sew. However, please note that the panel itself only includes the fabric. Depending on the project, you’ll need some additional materials like fiber fill, yarn for a mane, or elastic for accessories. So while it’s comparable to a sewing kit for beginner sewists, it isn’t a full “all-in-one” kit.
Is a seam allowance included?
Yes! All our cut & sew panels include a ¼ inch (0.7 cm) seam allowance. Simply cut out the shapes along the dashed lines, and you’re ready to start sewing.
Can I hand sew a cut & sew panel?
In theory, yes – you could sew the pieces together by hand. However, we strongly recommend using a sewing machine. Machine seams are much sturdier and safer, especially since most cut & sew projects are plush toys that will be stuffed. Hand-sewn seams may rip open more easily, and loose stuffing can pose a safety risk for children.
What else do I need besides the panel?
That depends on the specific panel. Almost every project requires fiber fill for stuffing. Some panels also need extras like elastic, snaps, cord, or yarn for details such as manes, closures, or straps. Each panel description will list the additional supplies needed.
Are cut & sew panels for kids?
We recommend them for ages 14 and up. The projects are designed to be sewn with a sewing machine and require basic sewing skills, so they’re not suitable for young children to complete on their own. However, they’re a wonderful project to sew together with your children and grandchildren!
Are all panels suitable for beginners?
No. Our cut & sew panels come in different difficulty levels, ranging from simple beginner projects (Level 1) to advanced designs with many pieces and details (Level 5). Each product page notes the difficulty level so you can choose a panel that matches your sewing experience. Read more about our difficulty levels here.
