You don’t need much for this XMAS garland DIY: just a piece of faux leather, a cord, your sewing machine, and about an hour of your time. To make this DIY garland for Christmas, simply sew the cord between two shapes made from sturdy fabric. Sounds simple? It is! And the result speaks for itself – sometimes, the simplest things are the best 🙂

Download our free templates, print them out, and start sewing! We’ve prepared star and Christmas tree shapes in different sizes. Feel free to mix and match or create your own designs! For each ornament on the garland, you need to cut two pieces, and we used about 15-20 ornaments in total.

Best materials for the xmas garland DIY
In the video tutorial above, we used faux leather. But you can use any fabric that doesn’t fray, has enough structure, and won’t curl at the edges. Great alternatives include vegan leather or sturdy, sewable paper. You can even paint or print on it with glitter or gold colors. Coated fabrics also work well for sewing a Christmas garland. If you want to use a soft or thin fabric, just iron on some interfacing to give it enough structure!
For the garland string, choose any cord or thin rope that’s soft and flexible enough to be sewn between the shapes of your Christmas garland.
