How to embroider eyes and nostrils of a Hobby Horse

1. Prepare the fabric and hoop

To begin, hoop an embroidery stabilizer together with the uncut fabric for the horse. Ensure the fabric is positioned so the entire pattern piece can be cut from it later, with the nap or grain direction running top to bottom within the hoop.

2. Embroider the eye

Load the eye embroidery file onto your embroidery machine and embroider step by step, following the machine’s instructions. Once complete, remove the fabric from the hoop and take off the stabilizer.

3. Prepare for the nostril

Next, cut out the eye and nostril areas from the paper pattern piece for the horse. Align the paper pattern on the right side of the fabric, ensuring the eye hole matches the embroidery. Use a fabric marker to transfer the outline of the nostril onto the fabric.

To embroider the nostril, position the placement grid provided with your embroidery hoop. Place the grid on the hoop and align the center with the marked nostril location. Make sure the nap or grain direction runs top to bottom within the hoop.

4. Embroider the nostril

Add the nostril embroidery file to your machine and embroider it on the marked position.

5. Finalize the fabric

Once the nostril is embroidered, remove the fabric from the hoop and take off the stabilizer. Place the paper pattern piece for the head on the wrong side of the fabric, aligning the holes for the eyes and nostrils with the embroidery. Transfer the outline of the head and any additional markings onto the fabric. Cut out the horse and proceed as described in the sewing instructions.

Important Tips for Working with Elastic Fabrics

If you’re using elastic plush fabrics like our SuperSoft SHORTY minky fabric, follow these additional steps to ensure the best results:

  • Attach an iron-on or self-adhesive stabilizer to the backside of the fabric.
  • Hoop this together with a tear-away embroidery stabilizer.
  • Place a transparent, water-soluble embroidery film on top of the fabric to prevent distortion.
