Needed materials to sew the free mittens sewing pattern
For sewing the mittens, choose soft, slightly stretchy fabrics for the best fit and comfort. Great options include French terry, fleece, minky fabric, or chunky knit fabrics. For the cuffs, ribbed knit fabric is ideal, as it’s stretchy and designed to hug the wrist comfortably. However, other stretchy fabrics can also work well, as long as they have enough give to stay snug on the arm while still allowing you to pull the mitten over your hand.
- Main outer fabric, approx. 10×32″ (25×80 cm)
- Lining fabric, approx. 10×32″ (25×80 cm)
- Stretchy fabric for the cuff, minimum size 9×24″ (22×60 cm), depending on your desired cuff length
Note: The pattern includes a simple cuff, but you can double the height to create a folded-over cuff for extra warmth and style!
We love using our super soft and cozy SHORTY minky fabrics for the lining and even for the main fabric!

How to sew mittens with lining
Outer mittens and lining
1. With right sides facing, pin the upper and lower palm pieces together, making sure the thumb sections align perfectly. Sew from the ‘A’ mark, around the thumb, and stop at the first corner (level with the ‘A’ mark).
2. Trim the seam allowances, especially along the inner curve of the thumb. Unfold the palm pieces and place them right sides together with the back of hand fabric pieces. Then sew the palm and back of hand in two steps:
- First, sew a short, straight seam from the lower corner of the mitten up to the ‘A’ mark.
- Then, fold the thumb out of the way and sew a second seam from the ‘A’ mark around the rest of the mitten, ending at the lower corner.
Repeat the same steps for the lining mittens, but leave the marked turning opening unsewn.
Cuff
3. Fold the cuff fabric in half lengthwise with right sides facing and sew along the long edge.
4. Fold the resulting tube in half, the wrong sides of the fabric together, so that the remaining raw fabric edges line up.
Sew mittens and cuffs together
5. With right sides facing, place the outer mitten inside the lining mitten (it’s easiest if you wear the outer mitten while doing this). The straight fabric edges and the side seams of both mitten pieces should line up.
6. Insert the cuff between the outer and lining mitten. Align the seam of the cuff with the side seam of the mitten (on the thumb side). Sew around the raw edges in a circle. The lining mitten should be on the needle plate, and you sew along the inside edge of the mitten.
7. Turn the mittens through the opening in the lining. Close the turning opening with a ladder stitch and tuck the lining mittens into the outer mittens.
That’s it! Pretty easy, isn’t? It’s the perfect sewing project for beginners and makes the best handmade Christmas gift!
