Choosing the right vinyl
When cutting eyes and nostrils for your Hobby Horse, we recommend using flocked heat transfer vinyl (HTV) if you want your horse to stay as soft and cuddly as possible. Flocked HTV has a thick, velvety texture that blends beautifully with plush fabrics like our SuperSoft SHORTY minky and feels almost unnoticeable when stroked. If you prefer a sleeker, more delicate finish, regular HTV is also an option.
How to use the cutting files for your Hobby Horse
- Load your chosen cutting file into your digital cutting machine, such as a Cricut or Silhouette, and cut the selected eyes and nostrils from your vinyl.
- Weed away any excess vinyl to reveal the design.
- Position the vinyl design on the fabric where you’d like the eyes and nostrils to be. To ensure accuracy, you can sketch out the placement using a fabric marker as a guide.
- Follow the pressing instructions for your specific HTV brand, including time and temperature settings.
TIP: If you’re working with a temperature-sensitive fabric like minky, always recommend using a protective layer such as parchment paper or the sheet provided with your HTV. This will prevent damage from the heat.
Choosing the right fabrics
For best results, choose fabrics with a pile length of no more than 1/8″ to 1/4″ (about 5 mm). Longer piled fabrics may not provide a stable surface for the vinyl to adhere properly.
