Make a Hobby Horse with our brown stick horse material bundle! The set includes our SuperSoft SHORTY fabric in taupe, a high-quality plush fabric that creates the softest realistic horse fur. You will also get our favorite yarn for the mane, a chunky merino wool that is soft to the touch and creates a voluminous mane. We have also included a small piece of black felt that you can use to appliqué eyes and nostrils of the stick pony. The white plush fabric piece is for sewing a blaze of your desired shape. The kit comes with our printed hobby horse template and a beautiful pastel DIY kit for making 2-3 halters and leads for the horse.

Components of the material bundle

Hobby Horse fabric: Our plush fabric SuperSoft SHORTY taupe with a pre-cut size of 39.5×29.5″ (100×75 cm) is rather cold shade of brown and perfect for sewing a brown stick horse as it goes perfectly with our brown merino yarn. The plush material is super soft, has a slight sheen and the short 1.5 mm pile makes shading the fur much easier (check out our tips and tricks on shading the fur here)

Yarn for the Hobby Horse mane: The classic Hobby Horse mane is made from yarn. Our favorite yarn that we used in most of our Hobby Horse examples is the BIG MERINO yarn from the Spanish company Katia. It’s a chunky merino wool yarn mixed with acrylic in brown that goes perfectly with every shade of brown plush fabric. It feels wonderfully fine to the touch and is absolutely not scratchy! Since it is quite a thick wool, your horse’s mane gets great volume even with just a few strands.

Fabric for the Hobby Horse blaze: You can appliqué different types of blazes to your Hobby Horse, such as a flake, star, long blaze etc.. For this, you will receive a 10 x 3.5 inch (9 x 25 cm) piece of our SuperSoft SHORTY in white. By the way: you don’t need an embroidery machine to make appliqués, your normal sewing machine is sufficient! How to appliqué with a sewing machine is explained in great detail in all our sewing instructions and you can also find videos about it on our Youtube channel.

Felt for eyes and nostrils: The included free black felt piece has a size of 3 x 3 inch (7.5 x 7.5 cm) and you can use it to appliqué the eyes and nostrils of your Hobby Horse. The good thing about using felt for appliqués is that you can use a simple straight stitch with your sewing machine because the edges won’t fray. Alternatively, the pattern includes embroidery designs to use with an embroidery machine AND cutting files to use with a cutting machine like a Cricut!

Sewing pattern: The bundle comes with a printed Hobby Horse template for our pattern HOPE (also featured in our Hobby Horse book). Our sturdy paper patterns are printed in color and include booklet-style illustrated instructions. The Hobby Horse template also covers accessories such as ear bonnets, a stable blanket, and basic halter instructions. Halter DIY kit: The bundle includes a Hobby Horse halter and lead DIY kit with pastel-colored ropes and webbing made from durable polypropylene (PP). You can create head collars, rope halters, leads, or reins, and decorate nosebands with braids. The kit comes with matching hardware and a PDF tutorial link for easy step-by-step instructions.

Addiotionally needed to make a Hobby Horse (NOT INCLUDED)

• White hand embroidery floss for the eye twinkles, approx. 8″ (20 cm), alternatively white fabric paint or a white acrylic marker
• Double-sided iron-on adhesive webbing (e.g. Heat’n Bond), approx. 8×3″ (20×8 cm)
• Toy filling, approx. 1.1 lbs (500 g)
• Stick with a maximum diameter of 1.2″ (3 cm) and a minimum length of 24″ (60 cm )
• Wool, cord or rope to wrap around the fabric at the stick opening, approx. 20″ (50 cm)
