Description

With our SuperSoft SHORTY fabric in ginger and the matching wool you can sew a great sorrel or chestnut Hobby Horse! Our bundle set includes the perfect, high-quality plush fabric that creates the softest horse fur. You will also get our favorite yarn for the mane, a chunky merino wool that is soft to the touch and creates a voluminous mane. We have also included a small piece of black felt that you can use to appliqué eyes and nostrils of the stick pony. The ivory plush fabric piece is for sewing a blaze of your desired shape.

Components of the chestnut hobby horse material bundle

Hobby Horse fabric: Our plush fabric SuperSoft SHORTY beige with a pre-cut size of 39.5×29.5″ (100×75 cm) is the perfect beige shade for sewing a Fjord Hobby Horse. The plush material is super soft, has a slight sheen and the short 1.5mm pile makes shading the fur much easier (check out our tips and tricks on shading the fur here). You can also select our SuperSoft SHORTY fabric in beige using the dropdown. It’s a little bit more saturated / intense than the camel plush fabric.

Yarn for the Hobby Horse mane: The standing mane of the Fjord Hobby Horse is made from black and white / ecru wool. We can find a tutorial on how to make a standing mane here. Our favorite yarn that we used in most of our Hobby Horse examples ist the BIG MERINO yarn from the Spanish company Katia. It’s a chunky merino wool yarn mixed with acrylic in black and ecru that goes perfectly with the golden coat of a Fjord Hobby Horse. It feels wonderfully fine to the touch and is absolutely not scratchy! Since it is quite a thick yarn, your horse’s standing mane gets great volume with just one ball of each color. If you prefer a rather long, not-standing mane for your Fjord horse, we would recommend buying an additional ball of the ecru yarn.

Fabric for the Hobby Horse blaze: You can appliqué different types of blazes to your Hobby Horse, such as a flake, star, long blaze etc.. For this, you will receive a 10 x 3.5 inch (9 x 25 cm) piece of our SuperSoft SHORTY in ivory for free! By the way: you don’t need an embroidery machine to make appliqués, your normal sewing machine is sufficient! How to appliqué with a sewing machine is explained in great detail in all our sewing instructions and you can also find videos about it on our Youtube channel.

Felt for eyes and nostrils: The included free black felt piece has a size of 3 x 3 inch (7.5 x 7.5 cm) and you can use it to appliqué the eyes and nostrils of your Hobby Horse. The good thing about using felt for appliqués is that you can use a simple straight stitch with your sewing machine because the edges won’t fray. Alternatively, we also offer embroidery files for our Hobby Horse HOLLY and the HOPE pattern from our Hobby Horse book comes with embroidery designs AND cutting files!

Sewing pattern: If you don’t have one yet, you can also buy a sewing pattern that you can use as a template to sew your stick horse. We offer two different patterns, Hobby Horse HOLLY or Hobby Horse HOPE from our book. HOLLY is much rounder than HOPE, a little bigger overall and her ears can be sewn in with a sewing machine. There is also the option of choosing a muzzle in a different color. HOPE is much flatter than HOLLY and has sewn-on 3D nostrils, but her ears have to be sewn on by hand. We have a full video tutorial for sewing the stick horse version of HOLLY on our Youtube channel:

✄ Materials & tools

Additional materials needed to sew a hobby horse:

  • White hand embroidery floss for the eye twinkles, approx. 8" (20 cm)

We recommend fabric finger paint as these are mostly permanent and non-toxic, but you could also use other fabric paint or acrylic paint pens. You can do most of the shadings with black and white, possibly pink or red to paint “fur-free” areas on the mouth.
